A picturesque walk around the ancient royal town of Somerton

Not far from the towns of Street and Glastonbury, you’ll find the ancient royal town of Wessex, Somerton. Full of stunning 17th and 18th century architecture, such as the Hext Almshouses and Butter Cross, there are also beautiful old doors and signs, ancient churches, cottages and quirky road names, and lots of little nooks and crannies. Somerton is a not only a photographer’s paradise but it’s also the perfect place for a lovely day out.

You could either head there in the morning for a little wander around town, before getting a bite to eat in one of the lovely cafes or pubs, or make a day of it and involve a pleasant walk or cycle ride along the quiet country roads overlooking the town.

After a stroll around, The White Hart serves up great food, the menu focused on local and seasonal produce. If you’re after something lighter then The Courtyard Cafe does a wonderful selection of soups, sandwiches, spuds, coffees and more.
I also recommend popping into ACE art gallery, which supports local artists. Located next to the Butter Cross, here you’ll find the latest exhibition and a beautiful selection of handmade gifts and cards all made by local artists. I defy you not to want to buy something. And if you’re in Somerton mid-week or on a Saturday, there’s a gorgeous shoe shop full of hand picked shoes and an Aladin’s cave of an antique centre, which might require a few hours of your time.
